Pressure Points - Advantages and Disadvantages Of The Wrist Control

Wear on the inside of the wrist, just above where you had a watch band, is a beautiful set of nerves ... ideal control for a wrist. This particular pressure point has some advantages and some disadvantages. Here is how to use the wrist pressure point to your advantage ....

Pressure Point Disadvantages

First, let's talk about why this is not the best pressure point on the planet. (Yes, I admit that not all techniques are perfect.) There are errors.

Before we continue withsome of the reasons why this is a big pressure point control, here are some potential problems into account:

* Not easy to find, for "pressure." Much easier to take the body to exercise rather than pressure.

* Some big guys are resistant to the pressure. Press, and they say: "Yes, so what?" No matter how hard you try, you can not move attacker with a pressure point on the wrist.

* You can move, but you can not block or completely control the opponent with onlythis pressure point. You have to combine it with something else.

Pressure Point Benefits

Even with the above-mentioned pressure-point error, this is still a very moving "cool" too. My 9-year-old daughter would say that this pressure point 'rocks! "

Here's why I call after the pressure sore on the inside of the wrist:

* It cuts a lot of time in order to lock the wrist. If you cause a wrist lock, and at the same time, move your opponentby the ankle of the wrist-locking hand in the wrist, then your opponent "takes you halfway." He or she will almost bend of the wrist for you.

* Good striking point. When you hit the inside of your wrist, or strike across the wrist, you will probably start to "line" of the nerves - all good pressure points. The slight numbness of the arm just enough for the snap on almost every wrist lock. You will not be much resistance, if you numb your arm a little.

* When you start,losing control of a shared lock, you may be able to move the opponent back into a better position by pressure on the wrist pressure point.

Charlie Nelson and His Little Red Book of Self Defense Authentic World War II Close Combat Heritage

Today it seems as if there were a martial arts school on every corner and many of them are of dubious quality. Most students are children and taught them some form of martial arts. Some schools offer self defense training, or the promise of a good workout, but few teach real martial arts fighting. There was a time, but if the practical skills they needed to have learned to survive a real street fight. Among the few teachers who have been fighting really understood to martial arts and self defenseCharlie Nelson, took what he learned during the Second World War, and used them to prepare the average citizen to fight hand to hand.

Charlie Nelson's story begins in upstate New York where he grew up in a Catholic orphanage, and he joined the United States Marine Corp at the age of 19 years. While in the Marines, he would receive the best education possible melee. Before each melee training, Charlie was a good boxer. The first chance he had Navy boxing team. That is, if heheard of Colonel Anthony Drexel Biddle Marines had been trained in hand in order to fight the First World War Biddle hand and showed FBI agents in Quantico at the time.

As fate would have it there, while at Quantico, Nelson would bunk bed with John Styer is an expert in blade combat, later author of Cold Steel is an excellent book on the melee weapons. Nelson would draw on all his influences intoto create his system of self-defense, but he always gave credit his mentors.

After he honored that have been adapted during World War II included the participation in the Battle of Guadalcanal with the First Marine Division, Nelson, to New York and establishment of the "Charles Nelson's School of Self Defense Combat Jiu-Jitsu and Karate." On the second floor of the school at West 72 Street, New York City, students would learn how to Street Fight, and Nelson abandoned the traditional martial arts uniforms in favor of theStreet clothes because he said that, what people wore when they really fought. Every step he taught could be used by anyone regardless of size or strength, and all his training scenarios were anchored in reality based on his research into actual crimes. Charles Nelson as some many others of his generation is no longer with us, but lives his work with us at The Red Manual. The book is filled with useful techniques that will work against thethe violent attacks. Nelson makes martial arts practice, for the average citizen and teaches them how to deal with a lot of attackers armed with knives, baseball bats, and even firearms. Even experienced martial artists such as former Army Ranger and a policeman Carl Cestari was removed from his dirty fighting techniques with a much older Nelson. Cestari was so impressed, he would be in Nelson's system and are certified in many of his techniques in his. Unfortunately, not allnoted Nelson system, but if people have the criminals would be those who live in fear. Nelson's methods of self-defense are as good as forgotten.

There are some who teach some of the principles handed down by them for the fathers of modern self-defense and martial arts reality. One such organization is the Self Defense Company. A global network of trainers in the teaching of the best systems of self-defense in programs that combine these valuable methods of struggle dedicatedwith modern systems of education.

Iron Palm training or T'ieh Sha Zhang Gung (Iron Sand Palm Method) is an old school training program that in many Chinese martial arts systems there are also like other Asian fighting methods. I absolutely loved these episodes...each one is funnier than the last. The comedy of Gracie Allen is timeless, so that even teenagers will appreciate it.

There are 2 half hour episodes per tape, 3 tapes in the collection, so only a total of 6 episodes, when they could have fit 12 at SP speed. Nevertheless, the quality is very good considering how old these eps are. I wish there were more available on DVD or VHS. I do not understand why they are not since these old eps are in the public domain (as far as I know). Unfortunately, Burns and Allen are no longer shown on TV reruns. Television has truly become a vast wasteland.

Do yourself and your family a favor by buying these timeless treasures before they run out, as they may never again be available.

For a generation too young to know that George Burns had a career long before Oh, God!, this Burns and Allen collection will be a wonderful discovery. This boxed set contains six episodes of the show that ran from 1950 to 1958, featuring George Burns as the straight man (believe it or not) and his scatterbrained (to put it nicely) wife, whose constant flubs and misunderstandings create laugh-out-loud scenarios. You would think her shtick would get old, but the more episodes you watch, the more you realize just how smart Gracie is, and in all her confusing ways, she gets exactly what she wants; she only gets funnier along the way. The first tape includes "Columbia Doing Burns and Allen Story," in which Columbia Pictures decides to make a movie on the life story of the couple (a tremendous disappoint to Gracie; she prefers Paramount because they put more butter in their popcorn). Things go awry when Gracie thinks that George has a wife and four sons living in San Diego. "Gracie Doing a Picture Without George" continues the performance theme when Gracie finds on old telegram asking George to do a Broadway show without his partner. Not realizing it's 30 years old, Gracie tries to force George to leave in one of the most ridiculously funny scenes ever presented on television.

The second video contains "George and Gracie Hear a Burglar," in which Gracie is convinced that a robber is roaming around outside. Detective Sawyer despairs at another phone call from the Burns household, but comes over to investigate. "Gracie Sees a Holdup--Johnny Velvet" has Gracie as a witness to a bank stickup headed by a Mob boss. When they kidnap her to keep her from testifying, they can't seem to get rid of her fast enough. Instead they decide to steal George away, but plenty of mistaken identities ensue. Gracie as the fumbling kidnapee is absolutely hysterical, and you can't miss the cameo appearance by the man who at the time was known only as an actor, Ronald Reagan as himself.

The final video contains "Gracie Buying a Ranch for George." After a weekend on Fred Astaire's ranch, Gracie is determined to buy George a ranch, despite his having no desire to live on one. The second episode, "Von Zell's Girlfriend Between Trains," has Gracie posing as Harry Von Zell's wife, after he tells an old sweetheart that he's married. Gracie is at her finest as she tries to remember her name is Mabel Von Zell. As an interesting bonus, the original show sponsorships are left on the video, giving us a glimpse of the advertising world of the 1950s. --Jenny Brown

Special footnote, actor Bob Steele was the son of director Robert N. Bradbury and the age of 14 he and his twin brother Bill Bradbury made a series of comedy shorts "Adventures of Bob and Bill" (1920), directed by their father...along came his first starring western "The Mojave Kid" (1927), released by Film Booking Office of America (FBO) and directed by his father, he changed his name to Bob Steele...making low budget B-Westerns for independent studios such as Republic, Supreme, Monogram and PRC which included nearly 200 feature films, serials and TV appearances...was in his twilight years at the age 59 when he got the part of the cantankerous "Trooper Duffy", in the western comedy series "F Troop" (1965), who at the drop of a hat would give his rendition of fighting "shoulder to shoulder with Davy Crockett at the Alamo"...Steele retired from the screen in 1973...his long career, spanning more than 50 years came to an end in 1988 when he passed away.

Orphans (1997) [VHS] Review

Peter Mullan makes a mighty impressive debut as writer/director of a feature length, here with "Orphans." Wisely eschewing the Hollywood formula Mullan presses onward with the tale of four siblings dealing with the death of their beloved mother, confining almost every minute of screentime into the eve and day of the funeral. The tale veers from the blackest comedy to heart tugging truths about the connectedness of family, of rage and sorrow, fear and rivalry, misplaced feelings, illness and acceptance. It goes to a lot of other places as well.

Any film that has a church's roof ripped and hurling off into a gale force wind, a Madonna crashing from a hit by a motorized wheelchair, a bartender who, literally, takes hostages for petty offenses (like reading his newspaper), a man who sees the positive aspect of nearly being stabbed to death (hey, if he can convince work authorities it was a work related injury he will be "compensated") has grabbed my interest. In addition to the quartet of family at the story's core the film is populated with just enough believable wack-job locals to make the tale seem pretty universal, despite its very Scottish setting.

The cast is uniformly excellent, each one believable and crucial to the storytelling. What a gem of a movie this is!

Three years before THE GODFATHER (1972) was released, director Francis Ford Coppola and actors James Caan and Robert Duvall worked together on THE RAIN PEOPLE. Scripted by Coppola, this movie combines feminism with elements of John Steinbeck's 1937 novella, OF MICE AND MEN.

According to Jimmy 'Killer' Kilgannon, "rain people" are normal-sized folks who are made of raindrops; when they cry themselves out, the rain people disappear.

SYNOPSIS--
Natalie Ravenna (Knight) is pregnant and panicked. Feeling trapped, Nat flees her Long Island marriage to Vinny (Modica--voice only) and hits the road to points unknown. She picks up an attractive young crewcut-topped hitchhiker. 'Killer' Kilgannon (Caan) played varsity football until a severe head injury left him brain-disabled. Killer remained at the college, raking leaves for them until he was given 00 and told to go away.

Feeling sympathy for this sweet but simple-minded fellow, Natalie offers a ride to West Virginia, where Killer believes his ex-girlfriend's dad has a drive-in theater job waiting for him. When they arrive unannounced, Ellen (Crews) tells her father not to hire Killer and she rudely demands that he and Nat leave.

Natalie abandons Killer in Chattanooga, but has second thoughts. Continuing west, they stop at a small Nebraska town, where Nat finds a utility job for Killer at a reptile zoo. His new employer, Mr. Alfred (Aldredge) convinces the young man to hand over all his cash for safekeeping. Natalie fears Alfred will cheat Killer out of that savings but is more concerned about escaping alone.

Nat drives hurriedly off and gets stopped by motorcycle cop Gordon (Duvall) for speeding. A citation must be paid at the reptile zoo. Despite her pleas not to force a return there, Gordon escorts Nat back and they encounter a scene of chaos. Killer has let hundreds of chicks out of their cages. Mr. Alfred discharges him and as Justice of the Peace he levies an 0 fine for property damage.

Again, Natalie is stuck with Killer. She's arranged a date with the cop and tells Killer to wait in her car. While Nat visits Gordon's trailer home, Killer wanders around outside. He peeks in a window and sees Gordon trying to force himself on Nat, so Killer angrily tears open the trailer door and attacks the cop.....

A Damsel in Distress [VHS] Review

From 1933 with Flying Down to Rio to 1939 with The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle, Fred Astaire made 10 movies. All except one had him partnered with Ginger Rogers. By 1937 he decided he wanted a break, and the result was A Damsel in Distress. Who was his new partner? Well, he didn't really have one. The closest in the film would be George Burns and Gracie Allen. Joan Fontaine, who was the love interest, simply doesn't register strongly. Probably deliberately, Astaire chose Fontaine because she couldn't sing and couldn't dance. She was the antithesis of Rogers. At 20, she was sweet, shy and attractive. She makes a pleasant love interest, but the movie works as well as it does because of Astaire, Burns and Allen, and some great George and Ira Gershwin songs.

Lady Alyce Marshmorton (Fontaine) met an American she thinks she loves, but her mother is having none of it. Lady Marshmorton is determined Alyce will mary Reggie, a proper British twit. She's keeping Alyce closely watched at the the family manse, Tottleigh Castle. But Alyce runs off to London with the family's butler, the obsequious Keggs (Reginald Gardiner) in pursuit. In London, Alyce meets Jerry Halliday (Astaire), a famous American dancer who has been promoted into a heart throb by his publicity agent, George (George Burns), assisted by George's secretary, Gracie (Gracie Allen). One confusion leads to another, with Jerry, George and Gracie arriving at Tottleigh Castle. Then there are misunderstandings, reconciliations and leaps from a balcony. Things aren't helped by a pool set up by Tottleigh Castle's servants to pick who will eventually win Lady Alyce's hand. Kegg and a young houseboy, Albert, are determined each of their own candidates will be the winner and win the pot for them. They take turns stirring the pot. However, is there any doubt who eventually wins the lady's hand?

Joan Fontaine doesn't sing a note in the movie. Only briefly and cautiously does she share a simple but elegant dance with Astaire. She was probably the most obviously non-dancer he ever worked with. The most complicated steps she's called upon to do are a few simple, graceful jumps. In every case Astaire is there guiding her with his hand or an arm around her waist. For a young woman with no dancing ability, it must have been a petrifying experience for her.

But with Burns and Allen, two pros, Astaire has one excellent routine and one classic. With the "I've Just Begun to Live" theme (there's no song), the three of them do a complicated and amusing three-way dance that is part soft shoe, part tap. The classic is danced to "Stiff Upper Lip" and takes place in an art deco fun house. The number was put together by Hermes Pan, who won an Academy Award for it. The three of them dance on and with every device Pan could think of for a fun house: Moving walkways, collapsing stairs, slides, turning tunnels, rubber doors, distorting mirrors and a circular turntable. It's inventive, surprising and great fun to watch. And pay attention to Gracie Allen. She and her husband were one of the great comedy teams in America. At best they probably are only faded memories now. Gracie, however, was not only a skilled comedienne, she was a very good dancer. She used small gestures and never lost the ability to look "lady-like" while dancing. She could be almost as funny dancing has she was delivering her ditsy lines.

The Gershwins wrote five songs for the movie and there's not a clunker among them. The songs are smart, amusing and clever. Even the one romantic song, "A Foggy Day," is best appreciated by literate lovers:

A foggy day in London town,
Had me low, and had me down.
I viewed the morning with alarm.
The British Museum had lost its charm.

How long, I wondered, could this thing last.
But the age of miracles hadn't past.
For suddenly, I saw you there
And through foggy London town
The sun was shining everywhere.

The songs are:

--"I Can't Be Bothered Now," a fast tap number that takes Astaire into the London streets. He turns his umbrella into an animate object. The number is shot with daytime fog swirling around.

--"Stiff Upper Lip" is a collection of amusing cliches, sung by Gracie. It sets up the fun house number.

--"Things Are Looking Up," sung by Astaire to Fontaine and then danced by them by the streams and trees of Tottleigh Castle.

--"A Foggy Day." Astaire sings of the first meeting he and Fontaine had while she watches him from her balcony as he strolls and dances in the fog-swept woods.

--"Nice Work If You Can Get It," is a close harmony rendering sung as entertainment at a party at Tottleigh Castle. Astaire joins in. It morphs into a fast tap and drum number for Astaire at the close of the movie, just before he and Fontaine sweep arm and arm out of the castle.

The movie can be located on VHS. The copy I have looks very good. For Astaire fans, it's a must have. The fun house number alone justifies the purchase.

A Damsel in Distress is a lighthearted romp to showcase the classic comedy team of George Burns and Gracie Allen, the classic songwriting team of George and Ira Gershwin, and the classic dance team of Fred Astaire and... Joan Fontaine? Damsel was filmed in 1937 when Astaire was taking a break after his seventh film with Ginger Rogers, so the 19-year-old Fontaine plays Lady Alyce Marshmorton, a young British woman whose scandalous love life leads to a mistaken-identity problem with American Jerry Halliday (Astaire). OK, so the romance falls flat and Fontaine can't really dance, but Burns and Allen provide their usual screwball comedy (especially in a funhouse sequence) and Astaire is as charming as ever, such as his dance with a drum set (an idea he revisited in Easter Parade) to "Nice Work if You Can Get It" and his rendition of "A Foggy Day," which set the standard for all singers to follow. Those songs are among the finest film songs the Gershwins ever wrote, and they're complemented by "I Can't Be Bothered Now" and "Things Are Looking Up." Fontaine, incidentally, got out of the musical-comedy business and over the next few years landed some pretty fair gigs in Gunga Din and The Women, and securing one Oscar nomination and one win for her work in two Hitchcock films, Rebecca and Notorious. --David Horiuchi

George and Gracie are in good form in these two clever, Christmas-themed episodes. Fun for old-movie fans, too, with guest appearances by familiar character actors Douglass Dumbrille and George E. Stone. The video producers have noticeably re-edited the shows, adding quick fades to bridge the gaps. But the frequent fades are only a minor drawback, because the quality is superior. These prints have never looked better.

The highlight of this episode is Grace's foray into service, dressing up as a maid in a misguided attempt to secure an extra room. The second episode, funnier and more charming than the first, finds George in the "pokey." As the narrator of the events of the few days before, George recounts an almost Shakespearean comedy of errors. Blanche and Gracie conspire to trick their husbands into buying exactly what they want for Christmas, a jeweled watch and a pearl necklace. Yet again, George is caught in the whirlpool of confusion when Gracie does a favor for her son. With elegantly timed precision, Grace Allen delivers her lines, as George expertly provides the material that will spark Gracie's humor. These episodes are the perfect Christmas treat, but are sure to make you laugh year round. Say "Merry Christmas," Gracie. --Amanda Powter

Fugitive Kind [VHS] Review

In The Fugitive Kind, Tennessee Williams gave us a conflict between fugitives from morality and bigots. For whom would you pull?

Williams mishandled Anna Magnani. I would have given a different explanation - or no explanation at all - for the presence of "Lady Torrance" in Two River County, Louisiana. "Daughter of an Italian wine maker" explained Magnani's accent, but Two River County seemed more suited for whisky distilleries than for "Italian wine gardens."

Did the original story, with Maureen Stapleton as Lady Torrance, include an Italian wine garden?

If the bigots of Two River County hated a "dego" (slur against Italians used by Williams), then why did they wait until he sold "Italian wine" to [black people] before they attacked?

I might believe the writer if he used whisky, or maybe even French wine, there in Louisiana; and no character, especially one played by Anna Magnani, would spend the day working after learning a crucial secret about that attack.

Williams had struggles other than writing-in Magnani, i.e., his illogical formula.

The first time I saw The Fugitive Kind I had no empathy for Jabe Torrance. The writer distracted me by using Jabe's bigotry.

The writer initially convinced me bigotry prevailed, but Valentine Xavier and Lady Torrance would have pushed any reasonable person to his limits. If there was a moral to this story, then it was, "Do not antagonize proven homicidal psychopaths with sexual misconduct."

Could better men than bigots not defeat depravity (Val in his way, Lady in hers)?

Reading about Williams having Elvis in mind to play Val (instead of Brando) makes me rethink his ambitions. In "King Creole," Elvis took on juvenile delinquents and their mob boss in Louisiana - released July 2, 1958. Did Williams originally hope Elvis would be a fugitive from morality in Louisiana in The Fugitive Kind, released December 1, 1959?

The original ambition might explain why Brando carried a guitar everywhere without playing the thing: frustrating. On the other hand, Elvis might have sung too many songs. (Imagine Elvis in his final scene singing, "I'm just a hunk, a hunk of burning love.")

No Elvis. More Magnani. Better.

Tennessee William's ability to write monologue for female characters was impressive. Nothing made The Fugitive Kind more touching than the short-lived passions of Lady Torrance.

Five stars: Brando and Magnani could make any writing a work of art. The entire cast was superb. Three stars: Tennessee Williams was in over his head with Magnani. Using bigots as protagonists and moral-fugitives as antagonists was a no-win situation from the start - okay for stories of poetic justice but a failed formula for tragedies.

The Smashing Machine - The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr [VHS] Review

This documentary was shot at the exact time Mark Kerr was going through a horrible period in his life. It is done somewhat low-budget so don't expect James Earl Jones doing narration but it's an epic story. Unlike others, this film isn't done in the documentary style of flashback and archived clips. The things that happen all happen as they're filming the movie.
Mark Kerr was an amazing fighter and like most of the amazing fighters in the world kinda fell into the sport. He was a wrestler and after college needed something to do for money. Putting his talents to use solved that problem.
I suggest that anyone who watches this movie watch some real Mixed Martial Arts fights beforehand. Give yourself that taste of what MMA is like and then you'll understand how much of a struggle it can be to train and compete.
P.S. It's been a while since I've seen the movie but in the bonus features, watching Bas knock out Rodrigo (i think), is probably one of the most classic shots ever.

South Park, Vol. 06: Mr. Hankey, The Christmas Poo/Tom's Rhinoplasty [VHS] Review

Of all the episodes of "South Park" I have seen, my two favorite episodes have been "Mr. Hankey" and "Tom's Rhinoplasty". I have never laughed so hard in my entire laugh (other than seeing the South Park movie) as I have during "Mr. Hankey". In "Mr. Hankey", Christmas time has arrived in South Park. Everyone is celebrating the festive holiday except for Kyle and his family because they are Jewish. Kyle immediately feels alienated from his friends because he is Jewish. Later Kyle's mom gets all PC and becomes offended by the Christmas decorations. She manages to convince the town mayor to take down all the Xmas decorations and change the school's Xmas play into some non-denominational play that has no references to the Christian holiday. IF that was funny enough, during the town meeting Kyle mentions Mr. Hankey, the talking poo. Of course he gets laughed at. The results is this hilarious song in the bathroom w/Mr. Hankey which I can never tire of watching. My personal favorite moment in the episode is when Cartman starts singing about Kyle's mom but not in a good way. It definitely gets the biggest laughs from me. In the episode "Tom's Rhinoplasty", Mr. Garrison goes in and gets a nose job. While he is gone, the kids gets a substitute teacher named Ms. Ellen. Stan (and the rest of the boys) develops a crush on her but it turns out that she is a lesbian. Non-stop laughs in that episode. I loved it when the boys were literally munching on carpets in order to become lesbians. I never tire of watching these two particular episodes. They are absolutely too funny and a reminder of the brilliance of Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Thank heavens for those two to make fun of everything and everyone.

Volume 6 bundles together 1997's holidays specials, "Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo" and "Tom's Rhinoplasty." Outside of the usual mocking social commentary and piercing wit from writers Parker and Stone, viewers will find some great musical performances in the "Mr. Hankey" episode: Kyle's "I'm a Lonely Jew on Christmas" lament; Mr. Hankey's "Howdy-Ho;" Chef's original, yuletide song (as only Chef can do); Cartman's "Kyle's Mom Is a Bitch;" and the finale chorus of the "Mr. Hankey" theme. While the town works to put on a "nondenominational, nonoffensive" school play, Kyle tries to convince family and friends that yes, indeed, the Christmas turd in a red Santa hat that sang and danced in his bathroom is real. The "Mr. Hankey" episode contains the debut of the hilariously true-to-life "um-kay" school counselor, Mr. Macki--who after talking with Kyle about his delusions of a poo, calls him "a twisted, little monkey." Also, included is the unforgettably sick and repulsively funny Mr. Hankey play-kit commercial. Of course, in the end, after all is parodied and sung, people come together in the name of, um, the holidays, I guess.

If "Mr. Hankey" is the South Park musical, then "Tom's Rhinoplasty" is the vomiting special (e.g., Mr. Garrison and Stan). Teacher Mr. Garrison takes a leave of absence to have plastic surgery (which turns his face into the cut-out of David Hasselhoff's--a bizarre effect difficult to watch at first) while the good looks of his substitute, Ms. Ellen, sends the boys reeling into lovey-dovey land. As they compete to woo Ms. Ellen during Valentine's Day season (Cartman: "I'm gonna buy her a vacuum cleaner; chicks love vacuum cleaners…."), Wendy Testaburger's jealousy festers and grows into an explosively funny climax (due in part to the twists on Ms. Ellen's character). Volume 6 is not to be missed... except by your children, of course. --Karen Karleski

While growing up in the 80s, I was fascinated by all the amazing martial artist I saw on television and in cinemas. Because I was born in 1979, the year was from Bruce Lee to come and go, and were the most popular martial artist Chuck Norris in the cinema, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. These martial artists were so fun to have because of their tremendous speed, agility to see, and their ability to show us, fighting techniques, which we had never thought possible. For me, the glory wasYear of martial arts.

I began taking karate classes in the mid 80s. After I in 1984 classic "Karate Kid" my parents at the local dojo me downtown and I immediately fell in love the classes. While I have learned a lot about self-defense, the most important things that karate has taught me was discipline and respect for authority. As I got older and better at karate, my confidence grew, but I've learned to be humble and do not fight, unless inDefense.

Fast forward to the 12th November 1993, the day of the Ultimate Fighting Championship hit pay-per-view for the first time. The UFC was conceived as a competition of people from various martial arts in an attempt to determine which style or instructor is the best. For this event one thing was clear .... Ground fighting is something that is not to be despised. Before this event, the martial arts of people were marked punching, kicking and karate chopthe fight. After I choke Royce Gracie game after game end by submission or, it became clear that the martial arts were never the same.

Since the first UFC have things have changed massively. Although there are dojos that teach only punching and kicking techniques that teach most of the schools I visit now, submission wrestling or ground fighting techniques in addition to their traditional routine. The martial arts have to adapt to the opponent, and I think itgreat is how many of the traditional schools have adopted these techniques. We just have to be careful that we do not lose that convey important values when you learn the art in a traditional dojo. Now with 30 years ago, I spent many years training in mixed martial arts schools, and although I like the cozy atmosphere includes many MMA schools, I miss some of the old traditions, as in bow and recites the philosophies of the style you studieren. While the mixed martial arts seem to be theDirection does everything, I will still have a deep respect for the traditional art with which I grew up.

Any other actor in the role of Eddie Farrell aka Jonathan, the housesitter, could not have pulled it off. It is as if the role was written with Carvey in mind - his antics and comedic timing were perfectly funny and in every scene he is in(which is pretty much everyone of them), i laughed, wholeheartedly. "Opportunity Knocks" is the one of the best movies with an SNL alum. If you are a fan of his characters from the show, you will probably like this movie about a con artist that uses the empty house of a wealthy bachelor to get into the lives of his family and fall in love in the process. Robert Loggia is very good as the father of both the homeowner and Annie, his sister.
I remember watching this movie over and over and laughing every time back when it first came on video. Between his karaoke stylings of "Born to be wild" and his imiation of George Bush(the first president in the family), you will be rolling with laughter. THis is a great comedy from a great comedian. I highly recommend it for a great laugh

Another highlight of "Mecha-Streisand" is the portrayal of a cynical, laid-back Leonard Maltin who, teamed with Sydney Poitier and Robert Smith of the Cure, band together to battle the evil "Mecha-Streisand." Stage Door Canteen [VHS] Review

This movie is so fun that it is almost poignant, since it's nearly impossible to imagine anything like it being made today. It's sort of in a category of its own, since it's somewhere between comedy, romance, documentary, musical, and patriotic propaganda, but it works.

It was fascinating for me to glimpse so many of the stars from this era, since I don't know most of them. Yet even in their brief cameos you can feel some of the charisma that made them stars. For example, Tallulah Bankhead (who I had never seen before) has maybe ten seconds of screen time, but she leaves one of the biggest impressions. Oh and in contrast to what someone else wrote, I thought the Romeo and Juliet scene (with the line "parting is such sweet sorrow") was rather lovely and well done (by a stage actress I had never heard of).

I could go on and one about various moments by various performers, because there are almost 50 cameos, and lots of them are really funny and/or moving (Katherine Hepburn's climactic pep talk, for instance, demands mention). The framing narrative is a little corny, sure, but it's just innocent fun (and c'mon, it's based on an Irving Berlin song).

I live in New York, and my grandfather once mentioned going to a place like the canteen (maybe even this exact one!) when he was in the navy stationed here in WWII, but I had never really understood what he was talking about before I saw this movie.

I stumbled on this one boring Saturday night on PBS and highly recommend it to anyone of any age. I hate using such an old-fashioned word as delightful, but it fits. Stage Door Canteen really puts a smile on your face.

Matt Hughes has been training for almost a decade for a fight with Royce Gracie, without realizing it.
